An Etan inground trampoline is a smart solution to save space while creating a safe and durable play area in your garden. Our trampolines are made in Europe from high-quality materials and designed with safety, comfort, and long-term use in mind. In this blog, we clearly explain the differences between round and rectangular models, which sizes and spring setups suit your family best, and what to consider when installing and maintaining your trampoline. We also cover useful Etan accessories such as safety nets, protective pads, and covers, so you know exactly which inground trampoline fits your garden perfectly.

What is an inground trampoline and why do many gardens choose it?

An inground trampoline is mostly set into the ground, keeping it close to lawn level and easy to access.

An inground trampoline saves space and does not obstruct views like a raised model on legs. Its low profile lets sunlight through and gives a neat appearance. At Etan, we notice many Dutch families choose this type for its convenience, safety, and aesthetic appeal. In this text, we use "inground trampoline" as the main keyword, along with variations such as “dug-in trampoline,” FlatGround, and InGround.

How does a round inground trampoline differ from a rectangular one?

Round inground trampolines are generally easier for beginners and younger users, while rectangular models use space more efficiently and suit experienced jumpers better.

Advantages of round models

Round mats naturally guide the jumper to the center, making them safer for young children and simpler to use. Round trampolines are usually more affordable to buy.

Advantages of rectangular trampolines

Rectangular trampolines provide a more even bounce across the entire mat. They work well in angular gardens and offer more room for jumps and tricks.

Choosing tip

Consider your garden layout: if it has many straight lines, choose a rectangular model. If safety and simplicity for young children are your priority, go with a round trampoline. Want to see our models? Explore our Inground collection: Inground trampolines.

What to consider regarding springs and maximum weight

The number and length of the springs determine most of the jumping comfort and maximum load of your inground trampoline.

Spring length and number

Short springs provide a gentle, safe bounce; longer springs allow higher jumps. Family trampolines for adults have more and usually longer springs. Rule of thumb: more springs = higher max load and smoother bounce.

Frame steel quality

Choose a frame with sufficient thickness (preferably ≥2 mm) and a tube diameter of 43 mm. This keeps the frame strong, durable, and capable of handling forces during jumping.

Practical example

Round inground trampolines in our range usually have 60–96 springs and a max load of 150 kg. Rectangular models typically have 52–104 springs and can also support around 150 kg. Consider who will be jumping the most to ensure the frame and springs are suitable.

How deep and large should the pit be?

Pit depth and diameter depend on the trampoline model; always refer to the manual for exact measurements. Below are average guidelines.

Average pit dimensions per trampoline size

Trampoline size Pit size (average) Pit depth (minimum)
281 x 201 cm 230 x 150 cm min. 65 cm
310 x 232 cm 260 x 180 cm min. 70 cm
380 x 275 cm 330 x 225 cm min. 95 cm
Trampoline diameter Pit diameter (average) Pit depth (minimum)
ø 244 cm ø 210 cm min. 65 cm
ø 305 cm ø 260 cm min. 70 cm
ø 366 cm ø 320 cm min. 70 cm
ø 427 cm
ø 380 cm min. 70 cm

Note: FlatGround trampolines sit at grass level and need different pit depths than inground models, which protrude about 20 cm above ground.

Step-by-step digging instructions

  1. Pick a location: at least 2 meters from obstacles, no overhanging branches, and a flat, stable surface.
  2. Mark the outline and dig the outer edge first, then the center (bowl-shaped) following the manual.
  3. Lay weed cloth and ensure proper drainage. Place the trampoline and check airflow around the mat.

Is a safety net necessary?

A safety net isn’t always required but adds extra protection, especially for young children.

When to use a net

Recommended for young children or multiple children jumping together. Also advised for higher jump capacities or uneven surfaces.

Fall zone and spacing

Keep 1–1.5 m clear around the trampoline. Grass works well for the fall zone.

Safety accessories

  • Protective pad (28–36 cm depending on model)
  • Mat cover
  • Optional: extra springs for higher load

Durable materials and pad construction

Strong pads and thick PVC are essential as inground trampolines get heavy use.

PVC thickness and seams

Minimum 0.55 mm PVC. Material is durable and resists tearing. Seams should be well-finished; the pad is protective, not a play surface.

Airflow and bounce comfort

Proper airflow prevents the “plop” effect. Some brands have ventilation or air channels. Ensure the model allows comfortable jumping.

Popular sizes and garden fit

Medium sizes (305–366 cm) balance jumping space and garden integration.

Small gardens (≤305 cm)

Round

244–305 cm diameter. Ideal for young children and small gardens. Compact and fun.

Rectangular

281 × 201 cm. Fits small gardens, efficiently placed along a fence or corner.

Medium gardens (305–366 cm)

Round

305–366 cm. Fits medium gardens, plenty of jumping space.

Rectangular

310 × 232 cm. Popular size, spacious but manageable.

Large gardens (≥366 cm)

Round

366–427 cm. Max play value, children can jump and move freely.

Rectangular

380 × 275 cm. Ideal for large gardens, multiple children, comfortable jumping.

Maintenance tips and accessories

Use protective covers, check springs and pad, clean regularly to extend life.

Periodic inspection

Check springs, frame, seams yearly. Replace worn parts and monitor rust or tears.

Cleaning and storage

Clean with lukewarm water and mild soap. Cover during long absences or winter.

Recommended accessories

  • Full safety net (for young children)
  • Matching cover
  • Extra springs for higher load

Frequently Asked Questions

Which type of trampoline is best?

We define three types of trampolines: above-ground, inground, and flat.

  • Above-ground trampolines are generally considered the safest and offer practical benefits: no digging needed, flexible, easy to move, and a quality safety net can prevent falls.
  • Inground trampolines are partially sunk into the ground, look discreet in the garden, and are easily accessible for children.
  • Flat trampolines sit flush with the ground and are very aesthetic.

Which type suits your situation best depends on usage, desired location, and preferences for appearance and safety.

Note: an inground or flat trampoline cannot be installed everywhere. When in doubt, consult one of our specialists.

Is it a lot of work to dig in a trampoline?

Yes. Digging in a trampoline takes quite some work. An inground trampoline (20 cm above ground) is easier to install than a Flat-to-the-Ground trampoline. Most of the effort goes into digging the hole and backfilling the soil. Assembling the trampoline itself usually takes 1–2 hours, depending on the type, size, and whether a safety net is included.

What do I need to dig in a trampoline?

To install a trampoline in the ground, you’ll need:

  • An inground or flatground trampoline (not one on legs!)
  • Installation instructions
  • A spade or mini-excavator
  • A wheelbarrow
  • An earth container, trailer, or nearby space to dump the soil
  • A measuring tape and string to mark the pit
  • A level for flat installation
  • Optional drainage if the soil is wet
  • Ground cover or weed fabric to prevent weeds under the trampoline

Check beforehand for underground utilities, pipes, cables, or drains.

Who can dig in my trampoline?

Some trampoline suppliers offer a trampoline dig-in service. Since they are often the supplier or even the manufacturer, they usually know the installation best – so they’re often your best bet. There are also plenty of gardeners who can handle the (digging) work for you.

Note: Installing a trampoline isn’t just digging a hole. Make sure you check how someone plans to install your trampoline. When in doubt, contact your trampoline supplier.

How much does it cost to dig in a trampoline?

Costs vary depending on the size of the trampoline and ground conditions. For a professional dig-in service, prices usually range from €700 to €1,800, including digging, placing the trampoline, and finishing the edges.
